UMzimkhulu Municipality vacancies must be filled immediately

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in uMzimkhulu has written to the Municipal Manager, Ziphakamise Sikhosana, calling for the immediate election of a Speaker of UMzimkhulu Council –  a post that has been vacant since the passing of Councillor Khayalethu Thobela more than 6 months ago.

We further want clarity on why we have two councillor vacancies? We are aware that the IEC, as required by law, submitted names from the list for these vacancies to the Municipal Manager, but nothing was done.

We are concerned about these unnecessary delays in appointments as it impacts on the functionality of the council, disturbing service delivery to the people.

UMzimkhulu Municipality does not belong to the ANC but to the community and as such should function in the interest of all the people and not only the ANC.

If Mr Sikhosana does not respond to our requests within the next 14 days, we will escalate the matter to Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube Ncube, requesting her to ensure that a Speaker is elected in accordance with section 41 of the Municipal Structures Act.

It is unacceptable that council sittings are held with rotating acting speakers.

The ANC must stop running this municipality like a Spaza shop. The people of UMzimkhulu deserve better.
