#MncwangoForPremier: DA calls for urgent intervention at Masakhane High School

Note to Editors: Kindly find soundbites in English and IsiZulu from KZN DA Premier Candidate, Zwakele Mncwango

The DA conducted an oversight inspection at Masakhane school where we met with the school’s management and governing body following the passing on of Mxolisi Mzulwini, a matric learner from Masakhane High School. Mxolisi’s tragic death comes after he fell ill at a boot camp held in Adams College during the spring holidays.

The Democratic Alliance in KZN sends its heartfelt condolences to the Mzulwini family and friends for the sad loss of their loved one.

The meeting with school administrators revealed startling findings ranging from the KZN Department of Basic Education’s neglect of the school to delays in permanent staff appointments.  Testament that the failing ANC does not care about the province’s youth and their futures.

Currently, the school has a staff complement of 25 educators where only 7 are permanent.

Worse still, the constant interference by the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) has had its own negative consequences on the learning process, due to educator absenteeism while attending SADTU events. 17 educators are alleged to have neglected teaching responsibilities in the classrooms since February this year and the MEC for Basic Education in the province, Mthandeni Dlungwana has taken no action despite having visited the school.

The DA has since contacted MEC Dlungwana on the conditions at Masakhane school and he has promised to get back to us. We will hold the MEC to account and ensure that a timely intervention is made so that the learning process can proceed unhindered.

The DA is ready to deliver an a programme of accelerated quality basic services that will afford learners in the Province a safe and intellectually enriching learning experience. Learners deserve an education system that prioritizes their safety and well being.
