MEC must take decisive action as rock-throwing moves to Howick

The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls on KwaZulu Natal Transport MEC, Mxolisi Kaunda, to take decisive action in the interests of the safety of the province’s commuters following reports of yet another rock-throwing incident yesterday, this time in the Howick area.

The incident brings to four the total number of such occurrences in the province during the past two weeks. The first incident tragically claimed the lives of two young siblings.

It is clear that KZN commuters are facing a crisis. The crisis is now and he must act right now. The responsibility of keeping KZN’s road users safe lies with him.

This issue requires a multi-pronged approach which must include SAPS, RTI, PRASA – given the number of railway bridges in KZN – and also the law enforcement officers within municipalities.

Securing our bridges is key. While it is simply not possible to patrol every bridge, those identified as hotspots must be secured without delay. Other suggestions, including steel cage barriers, must also be acted on and the necessary funding found.

The criminal act of rock-throwing points to the very heart of the breakdown of our social and moral fibre. While it may be an act of violent crime, there can be no doubt that it stems from a life void of purpose.

It is critical that the MEC bring together all stakeholders, including SAPS, RTI and members of the provincial Transport portfolio committee in order to visit all affected sites so that urgent action can be taken.

The time for talking is over. MEC Kaunda must act now to protect the public without delay.
