Grade 11 exam delays at Luphaphe High School while learners do principal’s laundry

The DA Youth in KZN will be meeting with DA KZN Education Spokesperon, Dr Rishigen Viranna, about the surfacing of a video of high school learners from Inchanga’s Luphaphe High School seen doing their school principal’s, Mrs Ngenisile Mbheje, laundry instead of writing an exam.

On Thursday 13 September, a grade 11 English exam paper scheduled for 12:00 was delayed as two female learners were busy with their principal’s laundry. In the video other students enquire the reasoning for the task and are told it was punishment for loitering outside of class.

After a conversation with an educator from the school, the Democratic Alliance was informed that this is not the first incident as not so long ago a student was pulled out of school to do the principal’s laundry at her home. Exams are crucial especially this time of the year, and it is disappointing to find a school principal disregard the importance of exams.

The meeting with Dr Viranna will discuss, among other things, the prospects of an investigation against Principal Mbheje for her acts and seeking for possible remedial action to be taken against her. The time spent by these learners doing laundry could have alternatively been used to revise their work or at best, prepare themselves psychologically for their exam.

The DA Youth in KZN calls on KZN Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwane, to investigate this matter as learners are sent to school to be educated, not to complete household chores for the principal.
