EThekwini loses R1,2 million as graduation ceremony is postponed at the 11th hour

During a DA oversight inspection on the 28th of September 2018, we were informed by officials at EThekwini’s Fire and Emergency Services that a graduation ceremony for new recruits was postponed after eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede, cancelled her attendance at the 11th hour despite having made a firm commitment to attend.

An estimated that R 1.2 million had been already been spent in preparation for the event. The cost items included 500 seater marquee, decor, stage, audio-visual and other miscellaneous items.

The Democratic Alliance in EThekwini has since written to the Head of Fire and Emergency Services Mr Enoch Mchunu to account for the total and consolidated costs incurred due to the  cancellation of the graduation ceremony.

EThekwini Deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer as the Chairperson for the Security and Emergency Cluster was to preside over the event.

The city’s celebrity mayor, Zandile Gumede has no consideration nor care for taxpayers monies. The city incurred costs for an event that did not take place and will incur further costs for the rescheduled ceremony. The Mayor must account for the decision to postpone and provide a report on the cost implications of such a decision.

For far too long Mayor Gumede has run the city like her personal tuck shop that she can open and close as she pleases. The DA will be raising the matter in the next council meeting.

We will keep this failing ANC government in check and ensure that ordinary citizens have a voice.

In building One South Africa for All, the DA will ensure that ratepayers money is spent on service delivery and support for critical functions such as the fire Department.
