EPWP strike: Mayor must stop empty promises and find honest solution

The eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede, must urgently address the ongoing strike by Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) employees.

Since Friday, amidst our city’s busiest tourism season, disgruntled EPWP employees have been littering the streets. See video here.

According to the workers, Mayor Gumede promised them full-time employment, which has not materialised from last year. They allege that instead of getting formal employment, more and more people are being employed under the temporary EPWP system.

The DA is aware of meetings that Mayor Gumede held where she used programmes like the EPWP system to mislead people, promising them full-time employment to achieve her own political ambitions.

As usual, the Mayor is rather busying herself with trivialities instead of addressing urgent matters such as this. Just las week Mayor Gumede revealed what is supposed to be municipal calendars. These ones, however, had only the photos of ANC executive members, omitting members from opposition parties who also form part of the eThekwini Executive.

Whilst the DA does not condone the behaviour of the EPWP workers, it is imperative that Mayor Gumede meets with these workers and negotiates an agreement based on the truth and not on empty promises.

The people of eThekwini deserve a new beginning where the political ambitions of public servants don’t stand in the way of service delivery and good governance.
