DA Youth in KZN applauds decision to keep Thabani Mzolo in police custody

The Democratic Alliance Youth in KZN applauds today’s decision by the Durban Magistrates Court to keep Thabani Mzolo in police custody until his formal bail hearing on 19 June 2018.

Mzolo is accused of shooting and killing his former girlfriend Zolile Khumalo two weeks ago at Mangosuthu University’s Lonsdale Residence.

The Democratic Alliance Student Organization (DASO) will be launching a safety petition on all KZN university campuses, calling for management to prioritize the safety of students, staff and infrastructure on all campuses and in residences.

The campaign will be kicked off at Mangosuthu University, followed by the University of KwaZulu-Natal and will then be rolled out throughout the province.

Denying Thabani Mzolo bail today is another victory for women and children who are victims of abuse and assault in our country. Women abuse is still not taken seriously enough in South Africa.

Our call remains that universities do not wait for such tragedies to occur before proper security assessments are done and implemented. Universities must remain a place conducive to teaching and learning. We can not allow it to become dangerous spaces where women feel threatened.
