DA opposes tariff increase in Umgungundlovu

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in UMgungundlovu District has written to the KZN MEC for Finance Belinda Scott, requesting her not to approve the water tariff increase submitted by the District to her office. The increase from 21% to 45% is far too high for the already overburdened community of UMgungundlovu District.

Earlier in the year, the Provincial Treasury advised the District Municipality to conduct a detailed investigation into all the costs incurred to provide water and to take into account those specific costs when calculating the tariffs. Further, it stated that once the cost to provide water services is determined, the municipality will be able to determine the phase in increases as per revenue strategy. The investigation outcomes were not shared with councillors which can be translated as the deviation from the guidelines by Provincial Treasury.

It is important to state that the UMgungundlovu District, Msunduzi and eThekwini municipalities are all supplied by Umgeni Water. Msunduzi increased its water tariff with 13.08% and eThekwini with 15% respectively. Only UMgungundlovu District Municipality had exorbitant increase.

It is clear that UMgungundlovu does not care about its residents who are already affected by high inflation, VAT increases and high unemployment. The uncaring ANC government continues to make people’s lives worse than ever before. The new dawn for South Africans is more suffering for the people. The DA believes the situation could have been avoided by:

• Billing and collecting correctly;
• Conducting meter audit;
• Reducing fruitless and wasteful expenditure; and
• Dealing with water losses

The DA will explore all avenues to stop the District from abusing the residents.
