DA calls on MEC to explain how KZN Health X-ray vehicle vanished

The DA has been reliably informed that a mobile X-ray vehicle belonging to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health (DoH) has vanished, with no one able to provide any information as to its whereabouts.

The vehicle was donated in 2012 by what the DA understands to be the Japanese government.

It is licensed under the Nkandla Hospital and appears on the asset register as such. Yet, according to Hospital CEO, Mr JN Shabane it is not there (view here).

As a result of the vehicle not being accounted for, the hospital is unable to have other vital x-ray equipment serviced. This has in turn led to an inferior service being offered to patients using the hospital’s busy x-ray facility and has also led to patients in outlying areas, who require X-rays, not being helped.

The DA is stunned by this revelation. It points to the worst kind of management by the DoH under MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo and we expect the MEC to explain how a vehicle can simply go missing.

According to our sources, the radiographer who was employed at Nkandla hospital at the time the vehicle was received informed officials that equipment installed on the truck was not suitable for use in South Africa. At that point, the truck was taken to Grey’s Hospital and placed in storage while waiting for new equipment to be installed. Following this, it simply disappeared and no one knows where it is today.

Earlier this month, the DoH intimated that it would begin to look into the whereabouts of the vehicle. The DA will also submit a set of parliamentary questions to the MEC in an effort to force credible answers rather than have him pretend that he knows what is happening within his Department.

We will also write to the Chairperson of the KZN Health Portfolio Committee to update him in the hope that if the MEC cannot find the vehicle, a report is presented at the next committee meeting.

The MEC has some explaining to do and the DA will hold him accountable. Given his Department’s current financial and leadership crises it is unacceptable that such a valuable resource can just disappear into thin air.
