ANC allegedly handing out SASSA food parcels in Nkandla

The DA in KZN will today write to the Public Protector to call for an investigation into the actions of both SASSA and the ANC branch in ward 12 in Nkandla Municipality.  This follows reports that the ANC is handing out SASSA food parcels to grant recipients.

According to the information received, Nkandla ward 12 ANC chairman, Hlongwane, and ANC ward candidate, Xulu, allegedly distributed 50 food parcels in the Dqozeni Tribal Area near the Ntingwe Tea Estate on 9 June. The parcels, from the SASSA Nkandla service office, contained food stuffs such as porridge, oil, samp, mielie meal and sugar

It is also claimed that SASSA officials from the Nkandla service office were present but did nothing to stop this political interference by the ANC.

It is commonly known that the ANC uses food parcels as an electioneering tool to gain votes in poor and desperate communities. According to a recent Public Protector ruling against the ANC, it is an abuse of public funds for the ANC to distribute food parcels.

It is also clear that the ANC in KZN has realised it cannot campaign on the record of service delivery, job creation and fighting corruption.  This is evident by the fact that it is now preying on those living under desperate circumstances in order to win votes.

This action is not only an abuse of power but is also immoral and unethical.

Relief of Social Distress – commonly referred to as food parcels – is a national SASSA programme which is supposed to operate regardless of political affiliation. There is a process of social worker assessments to ensure that only needy and poverty-stricken families receive food parcels and that this programme is not abused.

Despite assurances from deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, that the ANC does not need food parcels to win votes, it seems that the ANC is falling back to their old campaigning tricks.

I will today write to the Public Protector to investigate the actions of both SASSA and the ANC branch in ward 12 in Nkandla Municipality.

The DA believes the distribution of Relief of Social Distress (food parcels) is a vital tool in the Social Services programme to prevent starvation in communities suffering high poverty levels. This process must not be politicised by any political party. Poverty knows no political affiliation and relief must be given to all.

The people of Nkandla and KZN will have their chance on 3 August to vote for better service delivery, job creation and the end of corruption. Their vote for the DA is for development, poverty reduction and a better life for themselves and their children.
